What Great Minds Can Do: Siobhan McGirl
Union, New Jersey
"I definitely would not have been able to start my career as an on-air reporter in such a strong market without my tremendous internship and on-campus journalism experiences."
As soon as she graduated from Seton Hall, Siobhan McGirl began a dream job as an on-air reporter in Roanoke, Virginia, at a CBS-affiliate station. "I was fortunate to have several offers," she says. "I definitely would not have been able to start my career as an on-air reporter in such a strong market without my tremendous internship and on-campus journalism experiences."
Siobhan's resume included five internships at television networks, including CBS and ABC. "Many of my internship supervisors told me that they love hiring Seton Hall graduates because our program has such a strong reputation; Seton Hall students work hard and they come in with strong skills."
In addition to Seton Hall's great internship program, the University also gives students hands-on opportunities on campus that help build important skills. As a freshman, Siobhan began writing for the award-winning newspaper, The Setonian. She also anchored the news on Pirate TV and reported for WSOU, the top-ranked college radio station in the country. And as a member of the University's Brownson Speech and Debate Team, Siobhan traveled the country while earning numerous awards.
Located just 14 miles outside of New York City, Seton Hall gives students extraordinary opportunities and advantages. "Because of our location, we've had former New York Times reporters as faculty, I've gotten a private tour of CNN's New York City bureau from a Seton Hall graduate who works there, and I've been mentored by other Seton Hall alumni, including the chief marketing officer at Johnson & Johnson and the head of communications at Univision."
"My time at Seton Hall has been amazing; the people here really care and they want you to feel comfortable and welcome. You know they are looking out for you. I think Seton Hall is really all about opportunities. You can do so much. And while I've worked for the opportunities I've had, many chances have been given to me. I don’t think I would have gotten that anywhere else."
