When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I first started discerning entering the seminary in 2016, when I was 19 years old.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
The example of the priests in my life, and their unshaking love for the sacraments, particularly bringing people the Eucharist and to penance.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
Being able to cook for my brothers!

What is your favorite scripture verse?
Psalm 43- “And I will go unto the altar of God, the God of my joy.”

What saint inspires you the most and why?
If I have to only pick one, I would say that St. Francis de Sales holds a special place in my heart. I have a strong devotion to “the gentleman saint’s” spirituality, and am amazed at his example of unwavering defense of the faith, and loving approach to bringing people to conversion and devotion.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I first started discerning the priesthood when I was 10, but the discernment for seminary came about during my sophomore year of high school.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
Seeing God's call through the seeds He planted in my mind through other people. My experience with God throughout my life and specifically through Eucharistic Adoration.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
Being able to grow with each and every one of my brothers has been a great experience, especially when they challenge me to do new things, such as choir. From these experiences I was able to go places I never had before, such as Carnegie Hall to perform.

What is your favorite Scripture verse?
Mark 10:45- "For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many"

Which Saint inspires you the most and why?
Saint John of the Cross inspires me the most as he kept his faith in God even in the darkest of scenarios, which challenges me to grow in my faith and deepen it each and every day.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I felt called to the priesthood since I was five years old. I started true discernment my junior year of high school.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
For me, it is not so much the question "what", but "who". My great-grandmother raised me in the faith and she had the biggest influence. Seeing what the Diocesan Priests of the Diocese of Metuchen do was really what influenced me.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
I think the highlight of my time at Saint Andrew's would be the time we spend together when we don't have responsibilities. Our time spent bonding as brothers strengthens our vocations and our friendships.

What is your favorite Scripture verse?
Luke 9:18-20- "Who do you say that I am?"

Which Saint inspires you the most and why?
I think that either St John Paul II, or St Benedict inspire me the most. Their willingness to combat evil in the world and to do good always serve as an inspiration.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I first started discerning about priesthood after I did my RCIA. I have been working with my vocation director for almost 3 years.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
I had joy in my heart while I was serving God in my home parish. However, when I spent time in the chapel, I felt something was missing and that made me think about priesthood. My community and pastor also encouraged me to enter the seminary.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
I loved the first retreat because I realized I was not alone in this journey to priesthood. I reflected during those 3 days of retreat about how God gave me a community of prayer.

What is your favorite scripture verse?
Matthew 29:19 - “And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times more, and will inherit eternal life.”

What saint inspires you the most and why?
St. Martin de Porres inspires me most because his humility made him a great person. I always ask him for his intercession to make me humble and patient.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
From a very young age, ever since I began altar serving in the second grade, I always had a strong admiration for the priesthood. I even dressed up as a priest and pretended to celebrate Mass in my room. While discernment for a priestly was always a lingering thought in my mind, I began reflecting on it seriously when I entered high school.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
Some of my greatest influences and role models that led to my decision to enter the seminary were my parents and my pastor, Fr. Irenaeus. My parents showed me the joyous life that comes with following Christ, and Fr. Irenaeus was influential in showing me the in-depth blessed life of a priest and the various roles that come with this vocation.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
One of the highlights of being at St. Andrew’s has definitely been the time spent in community in prayer as well as playing intramural sports with my brother seminarians. It is a great opportunity for us to spend time together in various environments.

What is your favorite scripture verse?
Matthew 28:20- “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

What saint inspires you the most and why?
Being Polish, it is no surprise that my favorite saint is Pope Saint John Paul II. Not only did he live a faith-filled life despite the struggles he experienced, but he was also able to conquer the evils and opposition he faced through intelligent, peaceful, and prayerful methods. There have been countless miracles in my life that I attribute through the intercession of this saint.

When did you first start discerning to enter seminary?
I really started to discern entering seminary during the fall of 2017 when I was in my sophomore year of college.

What influenced your decision to enter seminary?
The Lord has been so good to me in numerous ways. Recognizing my need and dependence on him, I cannot imagine life now without my friend and God.

What has been your highlight at the time of St Andrew's?
I've really enjoyed the fraternity of brothers that St. Andrew's facilitates. Every person here has in some way contributed to a deepening of my faith.

What is your favorite scripture verse?
Ephesians 24- "And put on the new man, created in God's way in righteousness and holiness of truth."

What Saint inspires you the most and why?
St. Paul for sure. His conversion, life trials and martyrdom give great witness to the faith.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I started discerning the priesthood seriously around my junior year of high school.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
I was attracted to all the aspects of the lifestyle of the priesthood ever since I was young. Even as I got older, that attraction, though it was tested, never ceased. Being brought up in a balanced, Catholic household, learning about the priesthood from my uncle, who is a priest in Philadelphia, going to Catholic school all my life and my love for the Mass were all really the foundation as to why I entered the seminary. To really see if God is calling me to the priesthood.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
I love the sense of community St. Andrew's partakes in. It goes to show that all of us, who are essentially in the same boat, are never alone in discernment and can count on each other as true brothers.

What is your favorite Scripture verse?
John 14:6- "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me."

Which Saint inspires you the most and why?
One of the many Saints that inspires me is St. Bernadette Soubirous. By her example, she shows that Our Blessed Mother chooses to convey her sacred and important messages to the people we would never think would be capable (knowing not how bright St. Bernadette was). It does not matter how smart you are or how stained you are from a sinful past, it matters that one trusts in our Lord and truly loves our Blessed Mother. Through the Blessed Mother's intercession, is where our Lord works the most, especially with regards to vocational discernment.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I have been discerning my vocation since I was seven years old.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
My ministry at my home parish has been the most influential experience in deciding to enter seminary. The joy and peace that I experienced while carrying out various ministries at my parish encouraged me that I would experience this same joy in seminary.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
The highlight of my time at St. Andrew's Hall thus far has undoubtedly been the community aspect of the seminary. We truly do have a unique fraternity among all of the seminarians here at St. Andrew's. I feel extremely blessed to be a part of this family at St. Andrew's Hall, having the gift of living with my brother seminarians.

What is your favorite Scripture verse?
Mark 1:16-18- "Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed him."

Which Saint inspires you the most and why?
Saint Peter has been my biggest inspiration as I know that at times I will fail as Peter did, but in the end I will work to follow God's will.

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I first started discerning whether or not to enter the seminary towards the end of my junior year and the beginning of my senior year of high school.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
My pastor, Fr. Joe Wallace, was a huge influence on me during my years of discernment. He showed me that the vocation to the priesthood is an act of total self-giving to Christ and his people. Fr. Michael Romano, my vocation director, was also a great help during those years of discernment.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
I definitely would say the fraternity at St. Andrew's Hall. We are all brothers striving to do God's will and be good holy Catholic gentlemen.

What is your favorite Scripture verse?
Philippians 2:8-9- "And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name"

Which Saint inspires you the most and why?
St. Paul has been one of my favorite saints. I believe that he is an example that Christ has chosen you, regardless of your past. He is also one of the greatest evangelists in the Church.

Peter Schirmer

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
I began discerning the priesthood when I was in middle school, so around 13. However, I did not take the discernment seriously until I went on a retreat when I was 21.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
I have very good friends who are in seminary currently, and at the time one of them was still discerning if he should enter into priesthood. I went on a retreat with said friend, and my whole life just turned around with a burning passion for Jesus Christ and His people.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
I would have to say the Marian Pilgrimage was amazing. Going to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception where I have been visiting since my childhood and being there as a seminarian had me overjoyed.

What is your favorite scripture verse?
John 21:15- “Feed my lambs.”

What saint inspires you the most and why?
St. Augustine inspires me most, because if he is a saint, then anyone can be.

Carlos Vargas

Headshot of St. Andrew's seminary student, Carlos Vargas.Diocese: Paterson

When did you first start discerning to enter the seminary?
When I was 7 years old, I started to ask myself about the Catholic faith, and what God wanted from me for my life. As a result, I began to have an active part in the church in my hometown. I learned how to be a good Christian from my pastor who I believe is a holy one.

What influenced your decision to enter the seminary?
The people of God influenced me because nowadays people are suffering due to the absence of God in their lives. They have everything they want such as money, cars, etc., but behind that, I believe they have a void in their hearts. How beautiful it is that I may bring others to have a deeper encounter with God.

What has been a highlight of your time at St. Andrew's Hall?
Community life has been the biggest highlight for me. Living at Saint Andrew's as an international seminarian can be a challenge because of language or even culture; however, I can feel how we are similar to the first Christian community where they could feel Jesus's love in each of them.

What is your favorite Scripture verse?
1 Corinthians 15:10- "But by the Grace of God I am what I am"

Which Saint inspires you the most and why?
Saint John Marie Vianney has been a great example for me after Jesus Christ, because as a humble priest in the village of Ars he did everything he could to win souls for our Lord. Even though he had many difficulties in the seminary and his priesthood, he always trusted in the Lord and persevered.
