Seton Hall Wins National Campus Mental Health Award  

The Association of University and College Counseling Center (AUCCCD), the largest organization of campus mental health leaders in the world, has awarded Seton Hall University the 2018 Media Award for its video on Panic Disorder as part of the “What’s Up Doc” series. The series is a collaboration between the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center (TLTC). This award highlights the importance of counseling and psychological services and recognizes Seton Hall University as a national leader in campus mental health.

According to Katherine Evans, Ed.D., director of counseling services, the initial idea for the series came from a brainstorming session related to promoting mental health wellness in a manner that would resonate with current students. Content would need to be brief, to-the-point, visually engaging, and based on student responses about issues they felt were important to them.  

CAPS then collaborated with TLTC to produce a series of videos that would deliver valuable information in a short amount of time through customized scripts, as well as on-camera narration and testimonials by faculty, staff, students, and members of Seton Hall clergy - all accompanied by impactful graphics and animation. 

The videos have made a significant contribution to campus mental health nationally and have collectively accumulated over 4,800 views on the University YouTube channel. In addition to students, the series has also been beneficial to faculty across the country in learning to better assist with student mental health issues. 

“This project is the result of hard work by a team who are dedicated to getting the latest information out there in the best way according to how students communicate – on cell phones, laptops, tablets and other technology. I could not be more proud of what this partnership between CAPS and TLTC has achieved,” states Evans.   

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) promotes overall health and well-being by helping students overcome obstacles that may otherwise prevent them from attaining academic, personal, and professional goals. The mission is to foster the psychological health and well-being of students in order to enable them to thrive, develop, and achieve academic success.  

All matriculated students at Seton Hall, including undergraduate, graduate, law, and seminary students are eligible to receive a comprehensive assessment and referral to appropriate services at CAPS or to an off-site service provider.  

Students seeking counseling are encouraged to call (973) 761-9500 to set up an appointment. Students may also stop by in-person and make an appointment. The offices are located on the second floor of Mooney Hall. Hours are Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. After hours: Call Public Safety at (973) 761- 9300. Public Safety can contact a CAPS on-call counselor who is available for emergency phone consultation and crisis intervention.

The Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center (TLTC) Digital Media team handles various audio and video projects for the University community that include web-streaming live events, editing, podcasting, event recording for on-demand viewing, and producing high-quality original video content.
