CFD Event: "Improving Classroom Discussion"  

ClassroomOn Wednesday, March 16th from 12:30-2:00 p.m., the Center for Faculty Development will sponsor a discussion on "Improving Classroom Discussion" in the Faculty Lounge, University Center, lead by Mary Balkun, Professor of English and Debra Zinicola, Professor of Educational Studies.

Mary Balkun, Professor of English, and Debra Zinicola, Professor of Education Studies, will present practical tips and advice for ways to improve discussion in the classroom. These methods can be used in a variety of situations and can help you better engage students in the learning process.

Mary Balkun is the author of The American Counterfeit: Authenticity and Identity in American Literature and Culture, articles on American literature and culture, and Associate Editor of the Greenwood Encyclopedia of American Poets and Poetry. She is on the editorial board of Transformations, the Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy.

Debra Zinicola is an associate professor in the Educational Studies Department. Her background was in K-6 education for 16 years, and she presently teaches courses in Child Development and Teaching Science to undergraduate teacher candidates. She is education advisor to the Environmental Studies program and works with colleagues across campus on core curriculum issues, fundraisers like the Faculty Talent Show, and with North Star Academy seniors on growing plants hydroponically.
