What Great Minds Can Do: Justin Sousa

Photo of Justin Sousa"The Buccino Leadership Institute has helped shaped my view on how leadership and writing both intertwine. As a leader, you are ultimately guiding a group of individuals to achieve a common goal that will have some influence or effect on their life. As a storyteller, I don't see a better way of utilizing my skill set than applying them to help someone add onto their story."

Justin is also a content creator for the institute's website, reporting on any and all events and achievements within the Communication and the Arts cohort.

He is also a sportswriter for the campus newspaper, The Setonian. In his first semester at Seton Hall, his work for the newspaper focused primarily on recaps for volleyball games and swimming and track meets. At the beginning of the second semester, Justin has consistently contributed column pieces for the full print version of the school newspaper. Some of his columns include interviews with the Seton Hall softball team for a season preview and a column on women's basketball star Shadeen Samuels.

Outside of school, Justin is a contributor and social media manager for Scouted Football, a youth soccer blog whose work focuses primarily on the best players in North America under the age of 23. As social media manager for the blog, Justin oversees content creation for both their Twitter and Instagram feed who have a combined following of 48.7 thousand. He also holds the same position for the Red Bulls News Network, a blog devoted to providing news and updates on the soccer teams owned by Red Bull GmbH in New York, Salzburg, and Leipzig. In his short time with RBNN, Justin has written match previews and recaps for the MLS and USL franchises in New York. Some of his most recent work for the blog includes analyses of Cristian Casseres' performances at the 2019 U-20 South American Championship and how Mathias Jorgensen will fit into the New York Red Bulls' team for the 2019 MLS season.

Highlights of his work thus far include interviews with D.C. United midfielder Chris Durkin, Colorado Rapids midfielder Cole Bassett, and United States Men’s National Team and Chicago Fire midfielder Djordje Mihailovic.

Since high school, Justin has always wanted a career that pertained to writing. Some of his major inspirations were his sophomore year and junior year English teachers who took notice of his affinity for writing. Along with his love of sports, soccer specifically, Justin decided to pursue an education that would help him to becoming a sports journalist. One day he hopes to write about Major League Soccer for The Athletic. His goal in life is to attend and report on the 2026 World Cup hosted across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
