Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Through our course offerings, study abroad programs, student organizations and clubs, and faculty whose research interests span diverse ancient and modern foreign cultures, the mission of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures is to help students develop foreign language competence, a global perspective, and an understanding of the literatures and intellectual achievements of civilizations both ancient and modern.

In studying Ancient Greek, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, and Russian, our students consider religion, philosophy, mythology, politics, history, drama and film, art and architecture, and ideas about class, race, and gender. Our classes are cross-listed with Archaeology, Catholic Studies, English, History, Political Science, Religion, and Women's Studies.

Our faculty play important roles in the University Honors Program as well as cross-disciplinary programs in Asian Studies, Italian Studies, Russian and East European Studies, and Latin American and Latino/Latina Studies. We recognize that quality teaching and research are primary responsibility, and our faculty is devoted to excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, and to fostering close teacher-student relationships.

Michael Brown headshot

"Ciao a tutti! Currently, I am based in Milan, Italy where I work for the American fashion brand, Theory. As a Sales Coordinator for Southern Europe and the UK, my role requires me to engage daily with clients in the Italian language, while also demonstrating a strong understanding of the economic and political landscapes of the country when managing our wholesale partnerships in the region."

Michael Brown '13 Double Major in the School of Diplomacy and International Relations and in Modern Languages (Italian and Chinese)
