Journey to Your Well Being

Summer is in full effect and it is the perfect time to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather. With the all the time spent outdoors you need to protect yourself from potential risks. The goal is to spread the word about how important it is to protect everyone’s skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.

The sun emits both UVA and UVB rays. UVA  rays cause wrinkling and leathering of the skin. UVB  rays cause sunburns. Exposure to both UVA and UVB are associated with the development of skin cancer. It is important to protect the skin during exposure to sunlight.

An easy way to tell how much UV exposure you are getting is to look for your shadow:

  • If your shadow is taller than you are (in the early morning and late afternoon), your UV exposure is likely to be lower.
  • If your shadow is shorter than you are (around midday), you are being exposed to higher levels of UV radiation. Seek shade and protect your skin and eyes.

The UV index is a measure of the amount of harmful ultraviolet radiation in the sunlight reaching the Earth. The UV Index is accompanied by recommendations for sun protection and is a useful tool for planning sun-safe outdoor activities. For more information about the UV index click the here.
