Seton Hall University offers several formalized Themed Communities for students within our residence halls:
- Brothers, Living, and Ascending in Community and Knowledge (BLACK)
- Servant Leadership
- Sophomore Nursing Living Cluster
- Sophomore Discovery Program
If you wish to apply to live in one of the communities be sure you pay a housing deposit, submit a housing application, and submit a themed community application by the deadline.
The BLACK Experience
The BLACK themed living community is a pilot program commencing fall 2020. The community is designed to provide a space where black male students engage each other and the University community to enhance their experience, knowledge, and, understanding of what it means to thrive as a black male at a predominantly white institution (PWI). The thematic living community is a result of the efforts championed by Black Men of Standard (BMS), a recognized student organization that seeks to increase the profile of black males on the Seton Hall University campus, as well as increase campus opportunities of its members through scholarship, servant leadership, and professional development. These initiatives will be directed towards the first-year black male student population and be bolstered through mentorship opportunities with upper-class students, faculty, staff, and administration.
- Register as a full-time student (minimum 12 credits)
- Participants must be incoming first-year students
- BLACK participants will be placed in a specific University Life & Journey of Transformation (CORE 1001 & CORE 1101)
- Participants will also engage in community service totaling 15 hours (minimum 10 in the Fall; 5 in the Spring)
- Participants will engage in structured and organic social activities curated for BLACK members
- Participants will be paired with an academic coach to help guide them throughout their undergraduate experience
- Participants will be prepped and encouraged to apply for campus leadership positions
- This program is first come, first serve
- Applicants must pay a housing deposit and submit a completed housing application before applying
- Applicants must submit a completed program application by June 5th
- Applicants who are not admitted into the program are able to participate in various opportunities
This living experience provides a focus for out-of-class learning through programming that integrates intellectual stimulation, dedication to service, and social interaction in a community living environment.
Qualifications for Acceptance into the Program
- HRL Housing Application: Applicants must submit a housing deposit of $325 and a HRL Housing Application by the deadline. Applicants must also complete the Themed Communities Application and answer all the questions by the application deadline.
- Applicants must be a returning Seton Hall student.
- Community Service Requirement: Applicants must agree to participate in a minimum of 25 hours of community service each semester and provide documentation of such service.
All residents must sign and abide by the Servant Leadership Commitment.
Terms and Conditions
- Service Requirements: Residents are required to participate in 25 hours of community service each semester. Residents will have the opportunity to earn community service hours on their own with the pre-approval of the Residence Hall Director and DOVE. Servant Leadership residents will be asked to sign a "Program Commitment" form with more information and details on agreements and fulfillment of requirements. We reserve the right to cancel an assignment in the theme community due to non-fulfillment of the program commitment and require the student to vacate the room within two calendar days, or as otherwise stated in writing by the University.
- Other Requirements: Residents will be expected to participate in the Cabrini Hall community by attending monthly floor meetings, community builders and other programs provided by the residence life staff. Failure to fulfill the community requirements may result in reassignment in a non-themed community.
Sophomore Nursing Living Cluster
The Sophomore Nursing Living Cluster is housed on the second floor of Xavier Hall Tower.
The community will provide sophomore nursing students with the opportunity to connect with students who have similar interest and goals and develop a community of support which may include forming study groups and carpools to class. Members of this community will engage in in-hall programming that supports your experience as a nursing student. The floor will have a Resident Assistant who can relate to the experience of a nursing student who can act as a support system within the program.

- HRL Housing Application: Applicants must submit a housing deposit of $325 and an HRL Housing Application by the deadline. Applicants must also complete the Living Learning Communities Application and answer all the questions by the application deadline.
- Credit Requirement: Applicants must have 30 credits earned before the 1st day of the semester for which you are applying.
- GPA Requirement: A 3.0 cumulative GPA must be earned at the time of application and maintained during residency.
The Sophomore Discovery Program (SDP) is housed on the third floor of Xavier Hall Tower and consists of approximately 35 residential students. The SDP is the Housing and Residence Life initiative to bridge the gap between the first-year residential program and the upperclassmen residential area of residence life. The SDP provides tailored programming efforts and deliberate one-on-one interactions with paraprofessional and professional staff to strengthen sophomore students' connection to the Seton Hall community, plan for their future, and develop into the best they can be.
- Applicants must currently be a first-year student at Seton Hall, and must be classified as sophomore student during the 2020-2021 academic year.
- Applicants must submit a housing deposit of $325.00 and by March 6.
- Applicants must answer the below questions (a few sentences each) and submit their responses by March 6. Responses should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the SDP program by mid-March
- Candidates must confirm their interest or they will forfeit their spot.
- Please note: Members of the SDP may only room with other members of the SDP.
- All members of the SDP must attend an SDP Meet and Greet (Date TBD.)
- All members of the SDP must participate in a specialized lottery on April 25, 2019 to choose their placement on the Xavier Hall 3rd floor tower.

Program Terms and Conditions
All students who live on the SDP floor must attend at least one SDP program per month. SDP participants are expected to be present at all floor events such as floor meetings and community activities. HRL reserves the right to reassign your housing if you fail to adhere to the program guidelines and requirements.
