Student Health Insurance

The Health Insurance waiver and enrollment process will open again in July 2022 for incoming and continuing students.

All full-time students* (excluding those in online programs) who do not waive the student health insurance plan will be automatically enrolled.
*Undergraduate: 12 credits/semester; Graduate: 9 credits/semester

If you are covered under another plan and would like to request an exemption, you must electronically submit a waiver form. This process can only be done online and deadlines apply. International students are not eligible to submit an insurance waiver. Please see below.

Costs

Undergraduate students: $2,075 (billed once in the fall semester only for 1 year of coverage)
Graduate students: $4,733 (billed once in the fall semester only for 1 year of coverage)

  • Spring: Students automatically enrolled in the plan starting in the spring (e.g. those who were not full-time students in the fall), or those who were not enrolled in the plan in the fall but have a qualifying life event and now need coverage beginning in the spring, will be billed in the spring in the amount of $2,769 (graduate students), or $1,218 (undergraduate students).

Policy Period

Undergraduate and Graduate Students: August 15th – August 14th (the following year)

  • Spring: Students who were not full-time students in the fall and who do not waive the student health insurance plan will be automatically enrolled and covered January 14th - August 14th (undergraduate and graduate) or January 1st - June 30th (medical).

Waiver Deadlines

Undergraduate and Graduate Students: September 4th

Students who submit a waiver in the fall will not be required to submit a waiver in the spring; a waiver is valid until the beginning of the next policy period.

  • Spring: Only students who were not full-time students in the fall will be offered a spring waiver deadline of February 3rd. A waiver is valid until the beginning of the next policy period. Questions about spring waivers can be sent to StudentServices@shu.edu.

New Undergraduate Students (Fall only): Available starting in late June, Log in to PirateNet, click on New Student Orientation, and scroll down to "Health Services."

All Other Students: Available starting in late June, Log in to PirateNet, click on the SHU Portal, and click on the Profile & Finances tab. Link to Health Insurance Waiver is in the "Bursar Account" channel. 

Part-time Students

Part-time students in their final semester are eligible for coverage. If you are a part-time student in your final semester and would like to request insurance coverage, please complete the Insurance Request Form. Directions for submission are on the form.
