Federal Verification Procedure

The Federal Processor determines who is selected for verification. If selected by the federal processor, the student is notified on the Student Aid Report (SAR). The Office of Financial Aid also has the authority to select files for verification if there appears to be a conflict of information. If a student's application has been selected for verification, the student will be notified via e-mail and/or written mail and must submit additional documents. The required documents will be listed on the My Info or Money Matters tab on PirateNet.

If you need a copy of your tax return, call the IRS at 1-(800) 829-1040. Ask for a tax transcript. This form will be sufficient in lieu of an actual copy of your tax return. All tax documents should be signed, in addition to, including the student ID number on the top of each document. Additional documentation may be deemed necessary on a case by case basis.

If selected, there are negative consequences resulting from failure to complete verification within specified deadlines. All students are strongly encouraged to submit documents requested within two weeks of notification from the Office of Financial Aid. Please refer to the notification of verification written mail or e-mail for specific deadlines. We are required to inform you of these consequences. Our goal is to help you to avoid them. Federal verification regulations require the following:

  • Federal financial aid cannot be disbursed until verification is complete.
  • Verification may result in corrections that change your award amounts.
  • Stafford Loans will not be certified until verification is complete.
  • Estimated financial aid awards may be removed if verification is not completed within specified deadlines.
  • Need-based scholarships will be canceled if verification is not completed by October 1.

For eligibility of the NJ Tuition Aid Grant (TAG), the federal verification process would have to be completed by the state deadlines of 11/15 for fall awards and 3/15 for spring awards.

Institutional Need-based grants you may be eligible for will be offered based on the availability of funds if verification is completed prior to 10/1 for Academic Year Awards and 2/15 for Spring Only Awards. Completing verification after this deadline will cause you to miss out on Institutional Need-based funding.

Please note that, if verification is not completed, to avoid late fees, students must submit payment directly to the Bursar Office for payment of tuition, fees, housing and meal charges.
