The Professional Certificate in Cybersecurity Program provides an opportunity to advance your career prospects in areas that interact with computer and information systems. Participants will learn the essential skills and knowledge in demand in a variety of career tracks, such as business, computer science, information technology, diplomacy, political science, psychology and mathematics

The program covers many relevant topics, including:

  • How do I set up policy and procedures to ensure the safety of my company's business data? 
  • How do I prevent intruders from invading my computer systems? 
  • How can I secure my network to prevent cyberattacks?

What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the body of technologies, measures and practices to protect computer and information systems against unauthorized access or attack. Workers with skills and knowledge in cybersecurity are in very high demand in private industry and government. The cybersecurity body of knowledge is interdisciplinary including relevant information from computer science, electrical engineering, information technology, management, psychology, law, and application domains of the computer systems. The program teaches the fundamental skills and knowledge needed by workers in professions that interact with computer and information systems.

IT Security Fundamentals

Taught by Eric Lopez, M.A.E., Seton Hall’s security architect and lead security analyst, as well as an adjunct professor, this course provides an overview of the foundational concepts of cybersecurity, threats that are commonly impacting organizations today, and an understanding of how to create security policies that help organizations improve their security posture. This course is a prerequisite for Network+ and Security+.

Who should apply?

Anyone who wants an introduction to issues in cybersecurity may apply. Many positions of employment require a solid understanding of cybersecurity to lead businesses in a secure way, safeguard the privacy of individuals, address regulatory requirements and protect against malicious activity. 

A certificate of attendance will be provided after successful completion of the IT Security Fundamentals course as well as the Network+ or Security+ course.

Please note – successful completion of IT Security Fundamentals is required for enrollment in Network+ and/or Security+.

Curriculum

IT Security Fundamentals 

Course Plan

  1. Fundamentals of cybersecurity: what makes a good cybersecurity professional, plus basics of security controls, authentication and cryptography
  2. Introduction to risk
  3. Various types of security threats, and methods used to exploit these threats
  4. How to identify and assess vulnerabilities, plus gain an understanding of penetration testing
  5. Host, cloud, virtualization and mobile device security
  6. How to troubleshoot, respond, and investigate common security incidents

Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Use the CIA triad to assess potential security risks
  • Identify common attacks used by bad actors to infect machines and steal data
  • Create a security policy tailored to the risks their organization may be facing

Security+
This course will focus on the Security+ test principles and the material necessary to pass the CompTIA Security+ examination. The student will develop the knowledge of the Enterprise Security principles that are common in today's business environment. This knowledge will be critical to success in the positions of Network Security specialists. The material will discuss the common practices of security, network protection and the protection practices of industry.
The student will be required to complete preparatory examinations, assignments, and online discussion boards. There will be online coursework that needs to be completed and submitted in accordance with all scheduled due dates

Course Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain and define with clarity the terms of Internet Security principles and methodologies utilized in the industry
  • Explain and define with clarity the methods of protecting networks from common intrusion practices
  • Utilize common tools and processes to analyze various methods of attack upon a network
  • Gain the knowledge to complete the course assessment with a passing grade and/or the actual Security+
  • Take the (SY0-601) examination

Network+
This course is intended for entry-level, computer-support professionals with a basic knowledge of computer hardware, software and operating systems who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of networking concepts and acquire the required skills to prepare for a career in network support or administration, or who wish to prepare for the CompTIA Network+ certification exam.

Course Learning Objectives 
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify basic network theory concepts and major network communications methods
  • Describe bounded network media
  • Describe unbounded network media
  • Identify the major types of network implementations
  • Identify TCP/IP addressing and data delivery methods
  • Analyze routing and switching technologies
  • Identify the components of a TCP/IP implementation
  • Analyze network security
  • Implement network security
  • Identify the components of a WAN implementation
  • Identify the components used in cloud computing and virtualization
  • Identify the components of a remote network implementation
  • Manage networks
  • Troubleshoot network issues
  • Gain the knowledge to complete the course assessment with a passing grade and/or the actual Network+ examination

Faculty

Eric Lopez, M.A.E. serves as Seton Hall's security architect and lead security analyst, as well as an adjunct professor. Lopez is responsible for ensuring that both the on-premises and cloud architectures for the university are secure. Having worked in the IT field for more than 13 years, his intimate knowledge of the network environment, policies and architecture enable him to apply security best practices as well as innovative solutions to continuously improve the security posture of the organization. Previously, Lopez served as a security engineer at NBC Universal and a technology lead at Merck & Co. He obtained both his B.S. in religion and philosophy and master's degree in education from Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA. Because of his background in education, he has been involved in end user and student training in various industries and continues to mentor students at the college/university level. 

John Pannorfi, Seton Hall's director of networking and telecommunications, is a multitalented information technology director with more than 35 years of experience in network strategic planning, network operations, and implementation of cost-effective, efficient technological solutions. In addition, he is innovative in developing and directing network infrastructure and operations. Pannorfi holds voice technology certifications from both Cisco and Siemens, and has many years of experience in planning, designing, implementation, support and maintaining solutions for all networking and telecommunications services, such as LAN / WAN data, video, wireless, internet, voice and audio communications.
