Beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, four student teams will compete for more than $16,000 in seed funding from a panel of investor-judges at the ninth annual Pirates Pitch Startup Competition. Sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies in the Stillman School of Business, the student entrepreneurs will pitch their ventures in front of a live audience in Jubilee Hall Auditorium.
Meet two of the four competing teams:
Care Call
The Business Idea: Designed to replace the old-fashioned care bell that hospital patients used to signal for assistance, Care Call will be an iPad-like device that will enable patients to digitally signal for the type of care they need. Care Call will rout patient messages to the appropriate staff, cutting wait time, improving nursing procedures and increasing patient satisfaction.
The Students: Allison Lamoureux, Katie Mazzarelli and Annemarie Ryan are the pitch team. Care Call's support team is comprised of Patricia Esposito, Isabel Finan, Gary Kraft, Julia Skerratt and Isabella Valentino. All are Freshmen members of the Nursing Cohort in the new Buccino Leadership Institute. They are advised by Katherine Connolly, D.N.P., RN, APN-C, an associate director in the new Institute and an instructor in the College of Nursing.
Team: Allison Lamoureux, Katie Mazzarelli and Annemarie Ryan.
Flock
The Business Idea: Flock is an app that will allow consumers to easily compare the food prices and wait times for popular food delivery services such as Uber Eats and GrubHub.
The Students: This pitch team is comprised of seniors Peyton Elder, environmental studies major with a certificate in supply chain management, and Olivia Finan, a Stillman School student pursuing a marketing major.
Team: Peyton Elder and Olivia Finan.
The event is open to students, faculty, alumni, parents and members of the community. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to vote for the Audience Choice Awards.
Well-known sportscaster John Fanta '17, will serve as emcee for the evening. Fanta, on air talent for the Big East Digital Network and Fox Sports Network, also hosts a weekly men's basketball show named Shootaround, featuring behind-the-scenes, in-depth stories from the Big East Conference's 10 member schools.
